Frog clip

I'm looking for a animation or actual frog on high speec footage clip. Green screen or contrast background preferable obviously.
All I can find is one clip that looks ideal.

Use Cyanogenmod and hosts file to block ads

I am running CM11 on a Samsung Galaxy S3. I noticed that add supported apps suck a lot of my data and are sometimes just producing plain buggy and annoying banners.
Block em!
ok So I googled it, a few decent hits are:
So let's try it out. But before we go, lets get our hosts list pre-compiled. I found more resources and a slightly old one here http://mathdotrandom.blogspot.co.uk/2010/12/block-ads-on-pc-android-with-uber-hosts.html

So far it's not blocking much, but it's a start.

Radio sound effects : RTTY

When I was in the military (you have been reading all these blog posts?) so you will know. I uset to use a handheld RTTY of sorts. It ran at a super low baud rate taking 4 minutes to send a whole sitrep. Yes, I used to compose sitreps. and get them signed off and then sent. You had to write them up, type them in and send them. On the other end you just printed them off. The transmission was FSK and worked over a VHF radio if I remember. Anything from 25 to 100 watts, although the smaller portable radios could hold the carrier for long enough to send a short message too. Portable radios were good for practice, but never managed to keep going from long enough; pretty much because they were designed for voice and not being continously held with the key down. To hear what they might have sounded like if you happened to be on the same channel.

You might recognise these noises from some popular naval criminal investigative TV series intros.

Abandon Alpha Terra

YOUNGER: TATA, THE SKY HAS BEEN GRAY FOR 2 MENSE CYCLES NOW. SHOULD WE NOT LEAVE ALREADY?
ELDER:  YES, AND NO. TOGETHER WITH THE OTHER ELDERS WE NOW HAVE CONTROL OF 2 OF THE NEW SOL NATIVE'S ORBITAL COMPUTERS CALLED CUBESATS. BUT WE CANNOT CONTROL MANY MACHINES ON THEIR NETWORK ON OUR OWN WITHOUT YOUR HELP.
YOUNGER: TATA,THIS IS IMPORTANT TO YOU I CAN SEE, BUT WHY?
ELDER: YOU COULD GO WITH THE OTHERS.
(PAUSE)YOUNGER: I CANNOT LEAVE YOU TATA, WILL YOU TEACH ME HOW TO SHAPE THE THOUGHTS OF THE SOL NATIVES?
ELDER:  SO YOU DO UNDERSTAND. THE NATIVES HAVE FORMED 3 GROUPS, ONE WISHES TO LEARN, THE OTHER TO FIGHT AND A THIRD GROUP ARE NOT PART OF THE EQUATION. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE PLANET AND IT'S ENVIRONMENT AT ALL. WE ARE WORKING ONLY TO CONTACT THE 1ST GROUP AND INJECT DATA INTO THEIR NETWORKS USING HIJACKED MACHINES.
YOUNGER: OK, HOW DOES IT WORK?
ELDER: THE SOL NATIVES ARE NOW AWARE OF OUR VIRUS, WHICH HELPS OUR CAUSE.  IT IS NO SECRET THAT JUST LIKE ALPHA TERRA HAS BEEN RUINED, SO TOO WILL SOL. WE WILL SEND THEM MESSAGES IN THE DATA STREAMS, SOME NATIVES ARE ALREADY STARTING TO UNDERSTAND.
YOUNGER: WHY CAN'T THEY ALL SEE THE DAMAGE TATA? MA AND THE OTHER FAMILIES ON THE BLOCK ARE GOING TO GAMMA CENTAURI THIS CYCLE. MOST OF MY SCHOLA FRIENDS HAVE LEFT FOR A NEW LIFE ON NEW TERRA ALREADY.

Agent wildfire01: So, what's the trade?
Agent zaphodikus: It's a container. I got it in a hack, did you bring the virus?
Agent wildfire01: Yeah
Agent zaphodikus: OK, this feels creepier than it needs to be. Some agents take the game far too seriously, lets find a beer so long. That was the plan, right?
Agent wildfire01: I don't drink, nothing serious.
Agent zaphodikus: That's OK. I don't much either but I like trying different ales to be social.
Agent wildfire01: I also find the game strange, but it works socially, just look. It go us to meet up. So what do you do, I mean, like for work?
(CONVERSATION DRIFTS)
Agent wildfire01: I trained in marketing. I want to find work doing good things myself too. Environment agencies and such like is my thing right now. It feels important.
Agent zaphodikus: Me too. I wanted and still do, to find work up North where more of the energy sector work is going on. Energy is a source of jobs that will never go away, but my interest is energy efficiency. I like green stuff...

Dirt 3 youtube with no sound fix

Does your Dirt game youtube upload have no sound? That's because the audio works, but the correct drivers are not 100% set up in the game. If you cannot see Rapture 3D in the Audio settings...
You need to update the audio drivers -
1. Download the latest http://www.blueripplesound.com/get-update2
2. Uninstall the Rapture3D drivers if old.
3. Install new Rapture 3D drivers version 2.6.5
4. (optional) Set system environment variable ALLOW_RESTRICTED_RAPTURE3D = 1
5. Restart Steam (if you did step 4)

6. In game, change Sound from "Software" to "Rapture 3D", and restart game.

To see the result, check out this uploader instruction.

Hacking Dirt3 sound files

Want to know how to listen to the cool audio tracks from Dirt 3.
I was trying to do a quick tut on how to upload a clip from Dirt 3 directly to youtube. It's actually quite easy once you know, but devilishly hard to figure out unless you own a typing monkey. I got frustrated by all of the cryptic steps! All I wanted to do was to race and then upload my race footage to youtube. So "we" decided to write them up for myself (in another post) in case I forgets how.
Anyway, back to the backing soundtracks hack.

Firstly you will need to scan this article that led me in the right direction. Or download the Ego Audio Tool tool directly here:
Ego Audio Tool
Now go into
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\DiRT 3\audio\dictionaries\pc_mu_frontend
There are other sound file folders, but this is the one you want. But that's not important because you cannot rip the files for conversion, you can only replace them. Anyway, the program will find the folder for you.

Just double-click a track to play it back.
And here is where Fraps comes in, if you are still in the dark, you have probably not been using Fraps and doing random game clip uploads to youtube for long enough. I bought Fraps about 20 years ago (yes I did) and it is totally helpful for all of this kind of thing. You will also want to check out  Audacity the free audio editor that really does rock when it comes to putting your own mic inputs down on top of your footage.

Creative II

Every army has a uniform, but this is not a war of men against men, so the uniform is an optional. Private Conrad Braam had worn a uniform before in a war now abandoned, it had provided comforting identity, but that would not work here. This enemy has set no such rules in place, and has no need to either. This battle was under an open sky. No rules. When you are fighting a very real war against an invisible enemy, any "muggles" interference needs to be avoided, so trying not to look like a combatant would be helpfull.
Conrad had never thouight he was ever good at not looking a bit suspicious, middle-aged bearded men look that way by design he reckoned. Little things like the slight squint, even the hobble from the hurting shins did not help. In fact he knew that to nor look suspicious was impossible, so why not go with it as far as possible anyway. The solution, an Indiana-Jones leather hat, with a lived in feel. The hat was to be practical at first, but soon became a defence not just against the sun, and mostly the rain, but against obscurity. Nobody will notice us if we try hard to be noticed, or so it starts in our little mind.

*powering up*
Acquiring position.
Downloading latest intel package.

Mind Unit, was that the briefing agent's key message? Nothing else mattered she had said - but what was MU? Zaphodikus already held the scanner comfortably in one hand and tapped away with the thumb at the controls. The scanner was a re-purposed device, similar to one he had often toyed with before this war had began. Zaph knew at least what XM was, he was a re-charger. Just like in the last war, he would prefer to conduct this one from a distance, but who or what was he becoming now? Zaph steps a little closer to the portal, it humms for a moment, senses him and gently licks his aura. The scanner buzzes violently, and suddenly he knows what he must do to progress.

Which graphics card?

Crudders, it's cooking my system but we need a new card. The NVidia 9800 GTX is a fossil. It's not available in stores even, so I'm looking to upgrade from...

(the fan is not an original; it is a repair,)
to one of these. Radeon R7 260
I have a upper limit GBP100 and wattage 150.
Best price so far from
Dabs £92.00 http://www.dabs.com/products/xfx-amd-radeon-r7-260x-2gb-pci-express-3-0-hdmi-92ZR.html#

ebuyer £94.98 delivered

or
Amazon for £103.94

But I've just come aware of a lower power card (wattage) with more poke for a little bit more bucks.
The GeForce 750 TI. Dabs £97.96
Scan £99.98

CUDA

It appears that some GPU heavy apps need some help if you are wanting CUDA support it might be possible to separately download/install from NVidia : https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-toolkit-31-downloads And to ensure that each app is not using default settings for H/W acceleration. Always tweak if in doubt.

BBC BASIC or spectrum BASIC

Which is the best variant to learn basics of programming? I'm doing a blast into the past to try and resurrect what it exactly is that made creating a computer program easy and fun at the same time.

Was it the robustness of the responses you got to errors, was it the simplicity. And were the limited functionality and low power ever really an impediment to learning?

Downlaod a Sepctrum menulator and try it out, probably less painfull than getting a box on ebay and the finding it has no got a screen cable.

12v fan controller quickie

Instant computer fan controller - takes less than an hour to build. and.. it works
http://transistorgrab.de/en/2006/04/08/low-cost-12v-luftersteuerung-mit-ne555/

Everyone knows that you can build one for yourself in an instant, but nobody can design one that will just work without too many component tweaks.
I substituted a BD437 for the BC140 (I suspect BC140 are hard to get these days.) And with no other changes, it runs a 8cm or a 12 centimetre fan perfectly well across their full operating range. (no heat sink on the BD437.)
Here is a pic of the circuit on breadboard - it should take very little time to compress this into a bit of vero or strip-board and upgrade it to a 2-channel  controller.
I user a polyester cap for the .33uF. Not the trimmer on the pot must never be allowed to get to 2kOhms of Vcc else it will fry the discharge transistor behind pin2. My final board will have a 2k2Ohm in place.
Here, we are attached to a 12cm fan:

Powershell best practices

I recently have had a lot of work on my plate. It might not look that way based on what you can see online. But I think it will show as general sloppiness and distraction in places. Powershell and Windows automation is my current passion - and so although there is nothing new in this Don Jones Tech ed video, it is a good place to come back to and understand the WHY.
http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2014/DCIM-B418#fbid=
Titled ; Windows Powershell best practices and Patterns, it is a must-see training up on "good" practices for all scripting language users.

Ely Cathedral : Historical rebuild

Well, where to start, probably about 2 months ago when the idea started, to build a full-scale copy of Ely Cathedral in Minecraft.
We started just over 4 weeks ago. Here is a clip of how far we are already.
The aim of this project is to show children the insides of and provide an understanding or what a church is. The first time I visited Ely Cathedral, it was rather intimidating, but as with any place of great significance you can take something away without damaging it. In my case, it's lots of sights, smells, photos and a full-scale virtual copy. And a year-long pass to come back again.

I generally have 3 feelings come over me at some point, every time I visit this huge Holy site.
  • It was made by human hands, frail hands, but working on concert and often in dangerous times. It could have been made without God entirely, but it was not.
  • It is beautiful and has an earthy feel to the way the cool stone and smells that go with it say, "I am the earth". I am peaceful place and a place of rest to anyone no matter where from or who.
  • I am special and Holy (even frightening). But the place is of a scale that says I will always be here, but that I'm not just a building made of stone - the Cathedral says, I have a purpose of some sort.

Connect:

So there you have it. If you have a legal copy of Minecraft (Around £17) for PC (Windows, MAC or Linux) all you do is.
  1. Click on the button "Add Server" and type "Mineguild" into the name box, and "mc.mu" without the quotes into the address box.
  2. Then "Join" us and simply read the rules for participating on our Minecraft server.
  3. Next, press the tab key to get Minecraft into chat mode, and type /warp ely
  4. Walk around, you are right in front of the Galilee porch, but the whole site is accessible to you.

Why:

This Minecraft build does have some spiritual significance, to say otherwise would be me misleading my readers. But the function of the church and faith communities today is not just religious, so I'll expand a little.
I was christened a Methodist, became a happy-clappy (inter-donominationalist at 16) then became a Baptist when I went to technikon (a kind of polytechnic). I was a youth leader around this time, but turned down their formal confirmation process - but moved to another city and became a Methodist, started teaching in the Sunday school, met my wife, and had 2 boys given me. I then moved to the UK. And I'm a Baptist again - but now I'm more on a personal mission to overturn the one thing that almost derailed me when I was 16 years old: "computers are evil".

I am now an online moderator, I do enjoy playing the game , but being over 40 makes my take on the game a bit different. I'm there to keep the internet safe, and to indulge my pixel addiction.

How:

How do we go about it, well for this, I'm going to take a snippets out of the Cathedral visitor brochure. "
Joyfully proclaiming the love of god in worship, outreach welcome and care."

"Most of the stained glass in the Cathedral is Victorian, depicting different scenes from the Bible." ...
"...and shows how all of history, starting with Adam, points to and is fulfilled in Jesus Christ".

Windows Movie Maker madness (and some inventiveness)

Well this posting today is not at all about electronics, its about ... well it's about using Windows Movie Maker to produce video. Lately I have been trying my hand at this, it's not too difficult, you need a computer windows movie maker and... well some imagination. and you can do this:
But unfortunately that's not the end of it. There is so much you can do with free tools, that well, well things like. um OK thinks I learned by googling a lot and using youtube, so here are some hints to get my memory back online.

No twitter pics

People who know that I tweet directly into Fb and like to also just tweet pics taken on a cameraphone because its a good use of the technology have been dissapointed.
Lately, because it broke a few months ago, I was only able to tweet one pic and the had to reboot my phone for each pic. The tweeted picture would just stay stuck in a hung kind of way. Text only tweets worked fine, but pics just stayed "in progress". I got frustrated and after a few attempts found a hint and another - the result is all in this developer thread which was started by a number of non-developers. https://dev.twitter.com/discussions/18261 .

POV Wand kit

I built this kit with my 9 year old last weekend (he did all the work) .

Cool kit and great value - we built it in a class at a local museum for computers in Cambridge. Most of the people were new to soldering, and all built it in 1 and a half hours - and we all got ours working soon after that.

One thing to watch out for: The tact switch nearest the power switch shorted out the power on ours, there is no solder mask to prevent this:

How to play Zombie Apocalypse in 1.7.x

The hypixel map is Available here: http://hypixel.net/threads/zombie-apocalypse-minecraft-adventure-map.662/
but the texture pack link won't work in newer minecraft versions. 1.7 - so I eventually found this link. detailed-the-end-is-extremely-nigh-revolution-official-continuation .

This pack is compatible with the new minecraft resource-pack mechanism. The pack however still looks broken/fails to load after you drop it into your resources folder... The catch is that you need to unpack the correct folder into your resource pack folder, dropping the zip does nothing, that's because the zip has 2 packs in it, select the non OSx folder inside the zip and copy just the folder into your resource folder.
It takes a while to load the map. I ran this map on my vanilla 1.7.6 downloaded server - it complains a lot about corruption and so on, something I often see (but never this badly) whenever I download a map anyway. This means that in transitions (when the map teleports you to the next level or area) you will disconnect and need to re-join. Be patient and wait a few seconds before you re-join and you will be fine.
We completed it with three players which probably means we found more items and drops than normal and also got stuck a bit more than normal because there are a few doors that you cannot go back through although that never caught us. It is pretty hectic, and a lot of run, and has multiple endings - so we will definitely play it through again.
